In this blog post, I will get into a keyword research method which is most appropriate for promoting an affiliate offer.
To begin, there are many ways to do this research. From my standpoint, they all have value. For the sake of this ‘Anatomy of an Affiliate Promotion’ series, I’m going to show you just one method.
This is the method that I use most often (but not always).
Because I’m all about being efficient, I’m going to use a software called Keyword Elite 2.
You COULD do everything with Google’s free keyword tool, but why? A good keyword research tool will cut your research time in 1/2 or more.
We are in business and businesses have necessary expenses. In my opinion, a good keyword research tool is a necessary expense.
What tools do I personally use?
Keyword Elite 2 – Good for several reasons, but I like to use it mainly to find keywords which I will rank for.
Micro Niche Finder – Great for brainstorming and finding opportunities to research further.
Keyword Rockstar – Great for overall keyword research, but best used for paid campaigns.
I’ve tried many others, but these 3 are used often.
Ok, let’s get going…
Since I used my merchant account site as the example in my last Anatomy post, I will continue with it here.
Step 1 – Open Keyword Elite

When you open Keyword Elite 2, the first thing you want to select if Keyword Surge.
Step 2 – Configure Initial Parameters

1. Add your initial search query.
2. Unselect the Keyword Elite Engine. This has to return the most irrelevant terms I’ve ever seen.
3. Choose Ask.com, Google Suggestion Tool, and the FreeKeywords WT (Wordtracker) keyword sources.
I set my results to return parameter between 300-500 (if it’s a general market like Health and I’m trying to identify a niche, I may even bump this up to 1000. The issue with that is that around keyword 500, the results being returned are so far off topic that it’s ridiculous.
4. Once the parameters have been set, click Start.
Step 3 – Set the Initial Filters

The first filter I set is the number of words within a keyword. I only want relevant long-tail keywords, so I set this filter to only return keywords with a minimum of 4 words in the keyword.

The second filter I set is the number of searches per month. This is an estimation, but I like to set it regardless. I only want keywords with a minimum of 1000 searches per month.
Step 4

In this step, I surround my keywords with quotes and then Select all for export.
Step 5

I then right click on the selected results and choose Send keyword to Market Research Sleuth. What this will do is take my initially filtered terms and get me the competition data.

I take the default options here and click Start.
Step 6 – Set the Results Filter

Since I’m looking for low competition keywords with a decent search volume, my next step is to filter the number of competing pages. if a keyword has too few competing pages, then chances are there’s also no advertising, so eliminate these right off the bat. I also don’t want to compete with a keyword with more than 15,000 pages, since it may be more difficult to rank for these terms.
Now the question may be why does it matter if there are advertisers?
The quick answer is ‘odds of profitability’.
If there are no advertisers present, one may wonder if the term is worthy of optimizing for since no one paying for traffic considers that term worthy of spending money on it.
While this isn’t always the case, it is more often than not.
Step 7

While we set the previous filter at 500, now we are going to set the Campaigns filter to a min value of 2.
So why didn’t I leave the previous filter set to 0 and just filtered out the non-advertisers here?
Keyword Elite 2.0 doesn’t have a proxy system, so too many queries will get your IP banned from Google for at least 30 minutes. My taking that initial filter to 500, we reduce the number of queries being thrown at Google.
Step 8

Here’s where the fun begins, I like to sort my Searches from most to least. This will often give me the primary term I will focus on.
When will I *not* focus on this term?
If it’s a trademarked term, I often ignore it. Most people don’t, but I’m the one writing this blog post.
Step 9

Now you need to remove filtered results that are meaningless to your target promotion. What you have left are the keywords you will send off to your writing staff.
Congrats! You now know how to conduct EFFECTIVE keyword research.
Ok, ok… I have to address one more thing here.
There’s a lot of talk about ‘Silo’s’. Some people are die-hard silo freaks. Let me put this issue to rest…
When you are going after the low search volume, low competition terms, silo structuring is meaningless.
If going after competitive markets with higher competition and higher search volumes, then it will give you an edge over those that are not using it.
I USE SILO’S MYSELF, but only when the competition and search volume demand it.
I hope you found this post helpful.
In part 3, I will discuss the technology I use for site building, how to configure it, and why.

Hi Keith,
Thanks for the insights to your keyword research which totally makes sense. That is awesome.
I have one question. When you look for the # of searches a month with a min of 1000, is that broad, phrase or exact search?
Thanks
Stephan

Thanks for the post. Now I know what I have been missing in the keyword tools that I have been using.

I will say it again, you are really helping me out! I have been working online for two years (haven’t made any money) and I feel like I am finally learning some of the basic fundamental skills that I have been having a very hard time with.
Some of your stuff is over my head but I still take complete notes for future use as I advance. I really, really appreciate you helping me like this I am starting to believe I am going to have the breakthrough I have been promising my wife for two years. I put in a minimum of 10 hours a day because I have had some bad luck with my health and I am disabled. My health problems are genetic and they will never improve unless they have some medical break throughs so I really need to make this work.
With someone like you helping I cannot see how I can fail. I cannot wait until I am making a good monthly income.
Sincerely,
Howard
PS Thanks again!

Hey Keith, awesome stuff.
A quick question about using PPC to landing pages hosted on WordPress sites. I’ve noticed that Google somehow starts to “dislike” wordpress hosted landing pages. I know you use WP very extensively, have you experienced anything like this?

This information that you are give out is AWESOME … and not only that ..it’s FREE .
Now a days all the so called “guru’s” give all rehashed crap and charge you now for a monthly subscription
You would have save me thousands over the years had I found you sooner
Thanks Keith

I really love the thought of this ongoing series. It’s very much appreciated.
I use Market Samurai. I just love these guys. It is less efficient for finding long tail keywords, but I really like how we can check on the age, PR, backlinks and overall difficulty of the top 10 in Google.
Some kws with less than 10 000 competing pages are sometimes very tough at the top 10, while some with 100 000 are not.
I’m really looking forward to step 3 as it is a step I lack speed and efficiency.

Hey keith,
That makes things simples. Cool post.

Hi Keith,
Can you share how your keyword research changes if you are doing it for PPC (search and content) instead of SEO?
Thanks for the great info!

Thanks Keith
Very simple – straightforward and useful!
I really appreciate your simple step-by-step approach.

Are you a professional journalist? You write very well.

nice one Keith.
It’s good to compare your procedure with those I’ve heard with some other folks (no names mentioned) who are in the niche finding business.
I was curious to hear your thoughts on Market Samurai as a key word tool. I had been using Key Word elite (the previous version) and was not too happy with it. The new version form your screen shots looks nice, but I’m attached to my Market Samurai.

I am really curious about the wordpress landing page not being liked by Google adwords!
I still do not know where to find your stealth plug in.
