Google Adwords is one of the largest landscapes available for driving laser targeted traffic to your website.
In the beginning, the goal was how to outsmart Google. Today, the landscape has changed. Your goal now is…how to outsmart your competitors. In order to do this, you have to be unorthodox in your methods of market and keyword research. My analogy is this. If you do things at the same time, in the same place and in the same way as everyone else, then you will get the same results.
So what is an excited marketer to do?
The Answer…do your keyword research where your competitors are not looking. That way you find the keywords they don’t know exist. Notice the goal is not to find a new market, but rather how to tap into an existing market . How much more candy would you get if you were the only person swinging at a Piñata?
Here is an easy strategy that should produce some really nice results:
Pick up a magazine in your niche. There are several strategies that I teach my students regarding magazines, but today we are only going to discuss one.
Grab a pen and a legal pad. Then go through every page. Write down the domain name, company name, and the name of every person in that magazine that has to do with your niche. These become keywords that you will start bidding on in Google Adwords.
3 reasons why this works so well:
First, he prospect has to type the domain into the address bar vs clicking on a link. Some of them inadvertently type the address into Google instead of the address bar. Google then shows relevant ads on those searches.
Second, once a company or person is mentioned in a magazine, a certain number of people will go and Google them. Isn’t that what we all do? You read something, then you Google it. Your ad can be shown for those searches.
Third, these are highly targeted searches.
Think about it for a second. The person was reading a physical magazine, they wrote a URL down, they got up, and went to a computer, and they typed it into Google. That’s a motivated prospect. These are the people you want to be in front of.
Two things I want you to keep in mind with this technique:
The first one is sneaky, I have to admit. Using this strategy is like advertising in the magazine, but without the expense. Every person who lands on your page is a result of someone else advertising in a publication but finding your page instead. Secondly is your competitors are nowhere to be found.
So the benefit to you is super red hot targeted traffic, but at a fraction of the cost.
